Gli spagnoli seguono la strada vecchia fra Barletta e Cerignola passando l’Ofanto presso la foce e movendo in direzione di San Cassano (poi San Ferdinando), proprio nell’attraversamento dell’Ofanto Consalvo fa riempire d’acqua molte otri, per evitare che durante la marcia i soldati soffrano la sete, essendo la stagione già molto calda. Ma il caldo è eccessivo e l’acqua non è sufficiente. I soldati per la sete risentono ancor più la stanchezza, e cercano ristoro nelle ferule così abbondanti nella zona.
